Wowza smil file - caption

We are using Wowza server for our platform and we use smil files which contains different bitrate files in it (each with its unique name). I am looking for subtitle delivery where I just create one subtitle file and smil file contains the textstream tag so I don’t have to create multiple subtitle files for each bit rate video present in the smil file.

I have gone through few articles related to closed captioning on wowza’s website and I understand that the subtitle file should be in the same directory where video resides and it should be of same name (unless specified differently via url/parameter).

But I have few questions here :

  1. What mechanism wowza uses to search for subtitle file ?

If the video directory contains same name srt, webvtt or vtt, ttml file, which will be given the priority first ?

In case all are present, will the ttml be given the highest priority while searching ?

If wowza doesn’t find same name subtitle file, does it search the subtitle file specified in smil file under textstream tag ?

For example :

In other words, what searching mechanism wowza uses for finding out subtitle file.

  1. If I have more than one ttml files, lets say one with english and french, and another with dutch and german. Can I specify more than one textstream tag in smil file

? Basically we are trying to build a system where we can generate smil files programatically and there are chances where user can upload multiple ttml files for one

video as specified above (one with two languages, and another with next set of two languages). For Example :

  1. Is there any way (via API), we can get list of languages present in the subtitle file ?

Hello there.

  1. If the caption file is specified in the smil file, that is the one that will be used.

  2. Wowza currently only allows a single textstream with a single caption file. Although it can contain multiple languages. Be aware not all players can support multiple languages. As far as delivery, HLS delivering WebVTT is the best choice.

  3. No

Thank you.
