Wowza Transcoder AddOn: VoD with H.263

Hello,

Could you please tell me if codec H.263 is available in streaming in

the new version of Wowza for on-demand content. Also we would like to

know if we need Transcoder AddOn for this. And if we need Transcoder

AddOn how should we pay for it in the case of the on-demand streaming?

Here https://www.wowza.com/wowza3.5 it’s written:

"Wowza Transcoder AddOn now supports H.263 encoding for live and

on-demand video streams, enabling users to stream to older mobile devices."

On the description page it’s mentioned the option to use it for

live streaming only. (https://www.wowza.com/addons/wowza-transcoder-addon)

"H.263 video compression—Wowza Transcoder AddOn now supports H.263

encoding for live video streams, enabling users to stream to older mobile devices."

Could you please give us the manual, how could we make streaming of

the H.263 codec with the help of Wowza.

Thank you in advance.

Hi,

The Transcoder AddOn only works on live streams. I remember to have read an article once about how it was possible to trick Wowza and run VOD streams through the transcoder. If I find that article again, I’ll post a link to it here.

However, since transcoding generally is a CPU-intensive process, you won’t be able to serve many streams simultaneously (maybe up to 10 concurrent streams on a medium server, dependent on the transcoding template and CPU capacity). It’s highly recommended to transcode the streams into various bitrates and save the separate files, then serve the VOD eg. through a SMIL file.

For information on how to setup the AddOn, see this article: https://www.wowza.com/docs/how-to-set-up-and-run-wowza-transcoder-for-live-streaming

Please feel free to contact me if you need any help with the setup and configuration of your Wowza solution. As an independent consultant with years of experience with streaming video and Wowza, I’ll be glad to help you.

Kind Regards,
