Optimize wowza for HEVC input

Hi there,

Currently i’m working on a new setup that includes UHD resolutions for my live stream. Ideally i want to use HEVC 3840 x 2160 p50, SDR as the Upstream via RTP or SRT protocol. As I’m switching the source from H.264 to HEVC I’m having issues when watching the stream. It seems like either the decoder or the transcoder is not keeping up, my VLC is not showing all frames that it is decoding. In the log file i often times get this message:

comment server

MPEGDashWriterHandler.createChunkM4S[live-test/definst/hevc_360p_720]: chunkid: 26 a/v timecode diff = 3.561

Is there special treatment / tuning required for HEVC ingest?

It gets even worse when i go from 25fps to 50. I’m running Wowza 4.7.7 (build 20181108145350) on an AWS M5.24xlarge machine.

Any help is very much appreciated

Hello,

You may want to look into using a P3 instance with Tesla V1000 on AWS as this should support NVENC/NVDEC HEVC transcoding with it’s GPU capabilities.

To do so, we recommend that you use the NVIDIA AMI with Tesla driver and manually install Wowza Streaming Engine on this instance and then configure NVENC, NVDEC and CUDA Scaling.

Best regards,
Andrew
