Excessive latency in live playback on cell phones

Previously, with Wowza Engine 4.7 and prior we had excellent luck streaming our public meetings from our City. Since upgrading to 4.8 we have been experiencing latency to mobile devices. We recently upgraded to 4.9.2+6 and we are unable to effectively stream a meeting. We have very little, if any, customization done to the configuration of the engine.

The engine is running in a VMWare environment on Windows Server 12, 8 CPUs, 16GB memory, 300GB disk space.
We rarely see more than 15 connections at a time. We are a small town.

VMWare shows the following usage during this mornings live stream meeting,

  • Memory used = 6.5GB
  • CPU Used = 1%
  • Network used = 18.5 Mbits
  • Connections = 10

We currently publish 4 live streams 24 hours a day as *.stream applications. We have approximately 80 meeting files available for VOD. We have a single instance of a live meeting stream which is configured as a SMIL file direct from a HELO device in our meeting chamber.

There does not seem to be any issue when viewing a live meeting in a desktop PC browser. In duplicating the issue this morning I see excessive buffering more than latency.

Having read through the tuning documentation and troubleshooting documentation I am unsure where I should begin to discover the problem.

I opened a support ticket two days ago but have had no response as of yet.

I can provide any additional information as needed.

Thanks,

Working with support now.

With help from Wowza support we identified a network traffic issue that was causing the issue. They were responsive and helpful, the problem is identified and we can work to resolve it. It was not Wowza related.
