First of all sorry for my bad english, I’m italian.
I need to configure a live streaming service and a video on demand service.
My system is a HP proliant DL 580 G5 with 16G ram and 4 intel xeon processors quad core.
The operating system is a debian lenny linux.
I’m thinking to create a virtual machine with xen for my streaming server.
Do you think using a virtual machine is ok or it is better not to use virtualization?
Thank you.
A virtual machine will work but you will not be able to take full advantage of the hardware. So my recommendation would be to not use virtualization.

Yes, you do have a lot of resources. Virtualization will work fine. Will not perform quite as well as without virtualization. It is your call.

I would suggest running some load tests using our load tool to see what kind of throughput you can get out of the disks. RAID 5 performance is going vary based on the exact hardware/software. You can get a copy of the load tool by sending an email to test@wowza.com.

But with a 4 Intel quad core processors and 16G ram I have a lot of resources, don’t you think so?

And about disks?
I have 8 142G SAS hard disks.
Two in raid1 for the system and 6 in raid 5?
My question is: the requirements for a virtual guest running on ESXi 5 vs. the physical server recommendations.
We wish to run WOWZA Streaming Engine 4.0.6, build 12199 with the high-load recommended on a virtual guest running ESXi 5. Can this be tailored to work as well as the the production hardware system requirements of:
CPU: Dual Quad-Core or a single Hex-Core, 3.00 GHz or better
RAM: 16-32GB
Disk: 2 or more in RAID 0 (striping)
Network: 10Gbps Ethernet
