Why is GOP suddenly impacting playback

We have a client who has been streaming through us for almost a year now, and last night we encountered an issue where their live stream would not play. Every player we tried looked like it was connecting, but it would never play. I tried to play it from the Origin server and the Edge server. They use a Matrox Monarch HDX encoder, and their A/V guy eventually changed the GOP size setting from 30 down to 8. This change resolved the issue, but I don’t understand why this was all of a sudden an issue. Anyone have some insight on this?

Were you using Adaptive Bit Rate Streaming by any chance @Jeff McCollough? If so, the keyframe interval need to be aligned for all renditions within the SMIL file.

Also, when the GOP was changed, did it start on a keyframe which is critical for playback to begin?

If that wasn’t the case, you can submit a support ticket and we can analyze the logs and run some advanced tests for you for peace of mind in the future.

Thank you for getting back to me.

We are not using Adaptive Bit Rate right now. When he made the change, he stopped and restarted the stream and it did start on a keyframe.

Should I open a ticket to have this looked at?
