I’m trying to stream through a server that I have set up. I’m providing input from a mobile device.
When I connect my mobile device, success - the number of connections goes up to 1, according to the Wowza stats. And my mobile device confirms that it is connected. However, when I go to “test players” and try to start the stream in my browser, the stream is just black. I’m not quite sure what’s going on.

To better understand your set up, are you using your device as a live encoder? A custom built encoder?
What are the video and audio codecs you are sending to Wowza?
Can you see any errors in the logs? You can start Wowza in stand-alone mode and see the logs output to the console [install-dir]/bin/startup.bat|startup.sh
