PlayReady and HLS

Hi,

Is it possible to use a HLS transport with a PlayReady DRM mecanism ?

Thx.

I think PlayReady works with smoothstreaming only.

Richard

You can use AES encryption with cupertinostreaming (HLS)

https://www.wowza.com/docs/how-to-secure-apple-http-live-streaming-aes-128-external-method

https://www.wowza.com/docs/how-to-use-the-internal-method-of-aes-128-encryption-to-secure-live-or-vod-streams-sent-to-apple-ios-devices-moduleencryptionhandlercupertinostreaming

The experience should be about the same on the same client location, for the same stream in either smoothstreaming or cupertinostreaming. Have you tried the Wowza Silverlight examples?

Richard

Check the key frame frequency of the stream. If not already, make it 2 seconds

Richard

Djoulz,

Sounds reasonable. I will forward the suggestion.

Richard

How would this work with Wowza?

Richard

Not that I know of

Richard

Fisrt, thank you for your answer Richard.

According to some users tests, the quality of a Smoothstreaming session is very bad compared to HLS. There’s a lot of framedrop and it’s globally not very smooth (ironic).

We’ve contacted a lab hosted by Akamai that try to replace the Silverlight MediaElement to optimize the rendering, but it’s still far beyond the HLS experience.

Knowing that and beeing in discution with many manufacturers, they all plan to implement Playready decryption and HLS capabilities.

So, we imagine to take the best of the two world try to stream HLS with Playready…

Do you plan to open your DRM API to tweak those kind of things ?

Richard, We already use AES for HLS which is OK for most iOS devices but far too unsecure for most rights owners that require Playready. So we choose SmoothStreaming for that.

BUT, the results in term of feeling for the end user is very poor in Smoothstreaming compared to HLS. We tried everything: various GOP, various encoder, various streamers (even with

IIS Media Services). We put varnish cache in front of streamer, same thing. HLS is better than Smoothstreaming, there’s no discution about it.

Moreover, the new devices that are coming in 2012 (Samsung TV, PS3 WebMAF, LG TV, etc…) will all have HLS and Playready capabilities. So why don’t we use the better of the two

world : HLS + Playready !

So for us, it will be great to be able to unlock the DRM mecanism to use it with HLS…

What’s your feeling about that ?

Thank you Richard !

Guido, Richard,

I’m currently own your both solutions : Authentec player for iOS / Android and Wowza Server. I’m very interrested by your Playready encrypter for HLS if it could really interract with Wowza server. Could you tell me more ?

According to http://www.buydrm.com/devicedrm.php , BuyDRM supports PlayReady with HLS too. Wowza DRM add-on works with BuyDRM, so it is another good reason to implement it.

We’re not familiar with this tool, so perhaps Guido at AuthenTec can provide more information for you.

In fact there is another possible solution. You can use AuthenTec’s DRM Fusion Agent to play back HLS content which has been encrypted with PlayReady, and you can do so on Android and iOS devices. (Disclaimer: I work for AuthenTec). This solution has been deployed on million of devices worldwide, and it provides a playback experience very similar to the Smooth Streaming one, with the added protection provided by PlayReady.

How would this work with Wowza?

Richard

Hi Richard,

There’s a tool we provide that runs on the server side (on the Wowza server for example, but even a separate server is OK) that can PlayReady-encrypt the TS segments as soon as they are encoded. I cannot provide more details publicly, but if you contact me at my forum address (assuming you see it) I can share some technical information.

Hi Djoulz,

You may contact me for more details at guido.domenici at authentec.com.

I found this: https://www.wowza.com/docs/how-to-secure-apple-hls-streaming-using-drm-encryption

Hello,

Is there any update on this thread? We would be very interested in this kind of solutions…
