Live streaming freezes after a few seconds

I use Wowza to broadcast live streams from a camera via RTSP. The video streams but frequently freezes for a few seconds. When it resumes, the video plays at a slightly faster than normal speed, and then it freezes again.

If I put the RTSP string into VLC it plays fine. The stream codecs are video:H264 audio:G711_MULAW.

I tried lowering the video bitrate but the problem persists (I don’t think it’s a bandwidth problem as I tested in local network using cables).

Does anybody have any suggestions? Many thanks.

It does sound like a bandwidth problem, it might be on the encoder side. You can test uplink bandwith with this tool:

The Wowza FlashRTMPPlayer only streams over rtmp and variants rtmps, rtmpe, rtmpt, etc.

The Wowza FlashHTTPPlayer plays HDS (sanjose) streams over http.

Flowplayer does does both. Take a look at the nDVR example of Flowplayer, but remove “?DVR” from the playback URL to play simple sanjose stream

The Flash RTMP players use rtmp protocol. The .stream file contains rtsp url, which is the stream source, you are doing that right. You can playback over http with sanjose (HDS) streaming. Flowplayer does HDS and RTMP. The Wowza FlashHTTPPlayer examples do HDS streaming over HTTP.

What exactly do you want to do?

Did you try a lower bit rate? Bit rate higher than bandwidth at the client is the most common cause of freezing/choppy playback. Do you have a stream we can look at?

Thanks for the reply. Yes it does sound like a bandwidth problem, but I tried lowering the bitrate to 64kb on the encoder side and the problem still exists. On the other hand, VLC player plays the stream fine even at 1mb bitrate. I tested VLC player and Wowza on the same machine.

Will try the tool you recommended later, but could there be anything else?

A few updates: I just found out that the problem only happens if I run the flash player and Wowza on the same PC.

In my case, the encoder runs on a separate box connected to my PC via LAN. Wowza runs on my PC (localhost), and the JW Player is also hosted on localhost.

When I play the live stream using the player the freezing happens. I tried the FlashRTMPPlayer included in Wowza examples and have the same problem.

However, if I use a flash player hosted remotely, e.g. the one at https://www.wowza.com/gettingstarted, the live stream plays fine!

Any ideas?

Hi Jason,

Thanks for the reply. I had to put “rtmp://localhost/live” into the Server box before it can play the stream. Does it still use http instead rtmp?

The player linked here doesn’t use RTMP which is what you’re experiencing the issues with.

I can’t see any reason the Wowza /examples RTMP player would be freezing due it being on the same PC as Wowza as this is the only way to access it.

Players that use HTTP can effect the web browser for example if you are trying to do something in another tab while playing the stream it may slow the browser.

I’ve tested with the RTMP player at https://www.wowza.com/resources/3.5.0/examples/VideoOnDemandStreaming/FlashRTMPPlayer/player.html and the freezing/forward still happen.

When I used the player at https://www.wowza.com/gettingstarted and the stream plays fine. However, I had to change the server URL on that page from “http://localhost/live” to “rtmp://localhost/live” for it to play, otherwise the stream won’t start.

In either cases the stream value is “Camera1.stream” which contains a “rtsp://xxx” string.

Does the player at https://www.wowza.com/gettingstarted still use HTTP even the server URL is rtmp://? Is there anywhere else I can look at?

It’s really annoying as if I stick the rtsp:// string to VCL it plays fine. There should be something I did wrong in Wowza. Any suggests are appreciated.

Hi Richard,

We need to stay with RTMP as our systems use JWPlayer which I don’t think supports HDS. I’d like to find out why the freezing/fast forwarding happens with Wowza rtmp protocol. It looks like a bandwidth problem but the RTMP player and Wowza ran on the same PC. Is there anything I can check?

Richard- Yes I tried a very low bit rate but no luck. It’s difficult to get a stream for you because the camera is from a video recorder box that only outputs video while recording on DVDs. Will see if I can get one for you.

Jason- Yes I tested on different PCs one running Wowza 3.5.0 and others running 3.5.2. Will check the guide carefully. Feels like it’s something wrong in the configuration. Can Wowza output any diagnosis information?

Hi Jason,

I followed the guide you provided and tried various Property settings mentioned in the guide but still no luck. Here is the debugging info from logs/wowzamediaserver_access.log if it helps. Is there anything else I can try? The fact is the HTTP streaming looks fine as well as the VLC player. Many thanks.

We are still having issues with the video freezing.

The player linked here doesn’t use RTMP which is what you’re experiencing the issues with.

I can’t see any reason the Wowza /examples RTMP player would be freezing due it being on the same PC as Wowza as this is the only way to access it.

Players that use HTTP can effect the web browser for example if you are trying to do something in another tab while playing the stream it may slow the browser.
