# smil files on live edge servers? Do I need them?

I have set up the origin to do adaptive bit rate and DVR for our HLS streams. This works with no issues when I connect to the origin.
Now how to scale this out to the edge servers. Do they need to have the same smil file added to them or will they retrieve that from the origin once viewers start connecting?

Yes, you’ll need to add the SMIL file to all edge servers, in the content directory of the edge application.
Default content directory is:
[install-dir]/content
